DANCE STYLES

BALLET / TAP / JAZZ / STREET / CHEERLEADING / DISCO / SLOWDANCE / ROCK N ROLL

Ballet originally started in France and has a tradition of around five Centuries. Classes start at the 'barre', with routines designed to increase strength, mobility and 'turn out'. The discipline required for ballet develops a heightened sense of grace and fluidity. Ballet is taught in class with the BATD syllabus and grades are Pre Primary through to Grade 5, then eElementary, Intermediate and Advanced. Good posture and alignment are taught which will also enhance performance in all dance styles. Exams and Medal Test Awards can be taken. Please see the timetable for class details.

Tap has always been a popular dance, sharing as it does a common route with traditional clog dances, Russian step dances and Irish Jigs and Reels.Tap is taught in class with the BATD syllabus from Pre Primary through to Grade 5, then Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced. Exams and Medal Test Awards can be taken. Please see timetable for class details.

Jazz dance was associated with the first Jazz music from New Orleans. These days jazz dance has little to do with Jazz music and the name can therefore be a little misleading. Jazz is basically club-dancing to chart or modern music, and this is also the type of dance seen in pop videos and television chart shows etc… However Jazz also covers the type of dancing associated with musicals. Also West End Shows such as Chicago, Fosse, Fame etc… are all example of Jazz dance. We teach the BATD Syllabus and the grades are Pre Primary through to Grade 5, then eElementary, Intermediate and Advanced.

Street The class starts off with a warm up, then travelling steps from the corner to technique work in the centre which leads up to a routine. The style is based on current trends, pop videos and my own experience as a professional dancer. It is very demanding but lots of fun. Medal Test Awards can be taken. Please see timetable for class details.

Cheerleading If you've seen and loved 'Bring It On', then this is the class for you. Cheerleading has been going strong in the USA since 1898 believe it or not, and now, after 100 years, it's the latest craze to hit the UK. Cheerleading is lots of fun and requires a group effort. It is very similar to Jazz & Hip Hop except it is danced on the ball of the foot to make it bouncy and pom poms are used. The latest music is also used. Medal tests can be taken.

Freestyle began in the 1970s with John Travolta in the film Saturday Night Fever. Since then it has evolved changing all the time with current trends & music. Styles you will see used in Freestyle include Ballet, Jazz, Street & Contemporary. Although it should never mimic one style.

Fast disco incorporates so many different moves, such as kicks, spins, leaps, runs, fast arm movements, leg holds to side, front and back. This is all done to very fast music & so a lot of stamina is needed!

Slow Dance is more balletic with balances, slower walks and poses, stretches etc basically to show your ability to be graceful! Flexibilty is shown a lot more in this style of dance as it is very controlled and balanced. This is done to slower music such as Christina aguilera ‘The Voice Within’.

Competitions

If you attend the Disco Freestyle class you will have to the opportunity to attend competitions approximately 4 times a year. Sections in the competitions include Solo, Pairs, Teams, Slow Dance, Rock n Roll Pairs and sometimes Hip Hop. There are 4 levels.. Beginner, Starter, Intermediate and Championship! Everyone usually starts in beginner. At a competition you dance anti clockwise round the dance floor (you have to constantly be moving) with the judges(who are usually dance teachers) standing around the outside.

Costumes

For Beginners you have to wear a fairly plain outfit, can be one coloured leotard or for example red top and black trousers. For Starters it is roughly the same although you can mix colours and patterns but are not allowed any diamante stones. For Inters and Champs anything goes and you can have as many stones as you like but the more stones you have, the more expensive the outfit! Dancers also dance bare foot! Most people use fake tan, as this looks better against the costume! Quite a lot of make up is used on the face especially around the eye area.
